Letter from the Chairperson

Namaste Delegates,

It’s an absolute joy to welcome you to the 3rd Edition of the Shishukunj North Campus Model United Nations as the Chairperson of the Economic and Social Council.

I’m Manan Jain, a Class 11 student studying commerce, psychology, and applied maths—and yes, I’m one of those aiming for IIM. I’m also a pre-national air pistol shooter and a huge fan of sitcoms and Bollywood movies. (If you ever need a binge-worthy recommendation, I’ll send you my watchlist right away!)

From wide-eyed delegate to chair, I've learned it's not about holding the gavel, but about empowering others. Now, I focus on creating a space where ideas thrive, voices are heard, and people grow.

In this committee, I want you to feel comfortable expressing yourself—to debate fiercely, listen openly, and collaborate meaningfully. The real win at any MUN isn’t about awards—it's about growing as a thinker, a speaker, and a teammate. That’s what I hope this experience brings you.

And hey, don’t hold back on your questions. Whether it’s the agenda, ROP, or even how to draft your working paper, ask away. There are no silly questions here, and none of us on the bureau are here to judge—we’ve all been where you are. Ciao for now — may your motions always pass and your notes always get delivered.

Regards

Manan Jain

Economic and Social Council

Committee Description

Global trade is the lifeblood of interconnected economies, but beneath the surface lie imbalances. Established in 1995, the World Trade Organisation shapes rules that govern this trade. Its decisions, however, go beyond economics. WTO aims to reduce these barriers and promote cooperation. It provides a forum for negotiations, administers trade agreements, and offers a mechanism for resolving trade disputes. The WTO aims to ensure that trade flows smoothly, predictably, and freely, contributing to economic growth and development worldwide.

Agenda Description

Fast fashion refers to the quick and cheap production of clothing that follows the latest trends. While it allows people to keep pace with style at low prices, it leads to serious problems. Workers in supply chains face poor conditions and low pay. The environment suffers from pollution, waste, and microplastics. Consumers are exposed to harmful materials. This agenda looks at how international trade contributes to these issues and how the WTO can help encourage more ethical and sustainable practices.
