United Nations Human Rights Council

Letter from the Chairpersons

Namaste delegates

Welcome to the 3rd edition of the Shishukunj NC MUN. It is my pleasure as your chairperson to welcome you all to the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Since opportunity never comes twice, I am a focused and sincere eleventh grader who never passes up a chance. Usually, you can catch me talking about the newest book I've read or watching me get ready for my next public speaking event. I can also be heard grooving to any of Taylor Swift's songs. I also like to watch Ferrari race around the Formula One circuits.

This committee in particular is an extremely important one this year. We will talk about concerns pertaining to protestors' rights violations, both historical and contemporary. I anticipate that each delegate will be informed on the present state of affairs in their respective nations and will arrive with arguments and solutions related to those issues.

In addition to teaching me how to be diplomatic, MUNs have also helped me to improve my research and critical thinking abilities. I hope that everyone will have gained knowledge that will help them be better delegates after this MUN, and I hope that by the end of the conference, everyone will love MUNs as much as I do!

Regards,

Saara Ajmera

Chairperson

United Nations Human Rights Council

Committee Description

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), established in 2006, is the world's moral compass, combining diplomacy with human dignity. It has 47 member states and investigates serious human rights situations through questions and fact-finding missions. During crises, it convenes emergency sessions and passes binding resolutions. It also carries out Universal Periodic Reviews of all countries under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Using Special Procedures which are handled by autonomous experts, it defends vulnerable sectors, guarantees accountability, and enforces universal human rights globally.

Agenda Description

The UNHRC agenda "Measures to Protect the Right to Protest Without Persecution in the Modern World" is vital. Protest is the soul of democracy, allowing people to voice disapproval and demand change. Yet, this right is often violated with peaceful protesters facing tear gas, arrests, and intimidation. This agenda aims to end such abuses and safeguard human rights. Freedom cannot thrive without the right to protest; it is what unites citizens and holds leaders accountable. Without protest, true democracy cannot survive or flourish.
