Letter from the Chairperson

Namaste Delegates,

I am Vedansh Bagla, and it is a pleasure to serve as the Chairperson of the United Nations Security Council at the SHISHUKUNJ NORTH CAMPUS MUN 2026. I’m a 10th-grade student who loves debating and public speaking. From attending several conferences, I have learnt that MUNs are not just about winning and speeches; they are about diplomacy, dialogue, and listening to everyone.

Our committee will provide a platform for every delegate to engage in healthy debate, negotiations, and resolution formation while also gaining additional information about current geopolitics and how the world works politically, economically, and socially. I encourage all delegates to come with solid research, excitement, and, most importantly, confidence.

I hope this committee provides a holistic learning environment for all delegates, including first-timers as well as experienced delegates.

Remember, you are always free to ask every question in your mind, as we all are here to learn. The EB eagerly awaits meeting all of you and listening to your thoughtful discussions. I look forward to meeting all of you, and I hope we will have great discussions in the committee.

COMMITTEE DESCRIPTION

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is primarily responsible for maintaining international peace and security by addressing threats to global stability. It possesses the unique authority to issue legally binding resolutions under the UN Charter. For this agenda, the Council is empowered to investigate maritime frictions, mandate economic sanctions, and authorise collective military action to secure vital trade routes. To resolve crises, the Council investigates disputes, establishes terms for peaceful settlements, deploys military observers, enacts global economic sanctions, or explicitly authorises collective military force.

AGENDA DESCRIPTION

This agenda focuses on how tensions and confrontations between Iran and the United States affect the world economy, global energy supplies, and international maritime trade. A major concern is the security of strategic maritime chokepoints such as the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passes daily. Any military escalation, sanctions, naval confrontation, or blockade threats in this region can disrupt global shipping routes, increase oil prices, create inflation, and destabilise energy-dependent economies. As a result, the committee aims to protect international transit passage, prevent commercial shipping weaponisation, and secure vulnerable sea lanes.
