Letter from the Chairperson

Namaste Delegates,

It’s with both pride and sincere joy that I take on the role as your chairperson for the United Nations Human Rights Council. I am truly honored to welcome you to NC MUN 2026.

My name is Swasti Neema, and I am a 10th grader interested in computing and intelligence systems, the topics that we will be discussing here today. In addition to these, geopolitics is another area that I am passionate about. When I am not reading books or claiming that I have knowledge of every song written, you will catch me in sports or doing something adventurous. My MUN journey started in class 6, from being a confused novice to becoming an award-winning delegate. It is not the awards that kept me coming back. It is the learning, the debate, the friendships, and the thrill of it all. 

It doesn’t matter whether you’re an experienced delegate or a first-timer; never forget that no opinion is inferior and everyone is equally important. COMMITTEE DESCRIPTION

The United Nations Human Rights Council is an intergovernmental body within the United Nations responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe. It was established on 15 March 2006 by the UN General Assembly. The HRC consists of 47 Member States elected by the UN General Assembly. It meets at the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG), Switzerland, and provides a multilateral forum to address human rights violations and country situations. It responds to human rights emergencies and makes recommendations on how to implement human rights efficiently to prevent exploitation.

AGENDA DESCRIPTION

The agenda looks at ethical and legal issues arising from the rapid expansion of AI-driven surveillance. It is focused on limiting the misuse of biometric technologies and holding corporations accountable for using these technologies for monetary gain, leading to violations of privacy and freedom of expression. A key focus will be on how these systems repeatedly produce algorithmic biases, causing unfair outcomes for people based on their race, gender, or economic background, thereby causing the greatest harm to already vulnerable communities. The agenda also raises concerns about the growing power that governments and corporations hold over ordinary people through the mass collection of personal data—often without people’s knowledge or consent. The UNHRC seeks the development of adequate international safeguards and frameworks so that the development of these technologies continues to reflect respect for fundamental human rights.
